First Year Workshop 2025


Are you a first-year student on a three-year course or a second-year student on a four-year course? Our two-day workshops offer a comprehensive introduction to Life@HSF and what a career with us could look like. Hosted at our London office, you'll engage in interactive sessions covering corporate negotiation, alternative dispute resolution, and our impactful pro bono work. Plus, you'll get an insider's view of the firm and our work through an exclusive careers fair.


But that's not all! You'll also get to shadow a trainee associate for an afternoon, followed by a fun-filled evening social event. We only host two of these immersive workshops each spring, so seize the opportunity and apply today.

Roger Leyland Memorial Scholarship


At HSF, we're passionate about nurturing diverse talent. In collaboration with Rare Recruitment, we're proud to present the Roger Leyland Memorial Scholarship, a unique initiative designed to support aspiring lawyers from black and minority ethnic backgrounds.


Each year, one deserving scholar will receive:



  *   A generous award of £9000, spread over three years of study.

  *   A guaranteed place on our First Year Workshop, offering a glimpse into life at HSF.

  *   A dedicated support network within the firm, including an assigned mentor, partner contact, and trainee buddy.

  *   A guaranteed spot on our spring or summer vacation scheme in your second year of study (conditional on achieving the required benchmark in first year exams).

  *   Personalised 1:1 sessions with a qualified career coach from Rare Recruitment.

Campus Ambassador 2025/26


As a HSF Campus Ambassador, you'll be at the heart of an exciting campaign, bringing the spirit of Herbert Smith Freehills to your campus. You'll be the bridge between us and your fellow students, sharing the exciting work we do and the outstanding opportunities we offer.

First Year Presentation: Commercial Application to Law


At this exclusive event for first year students, you'll get an insight into HSF, the work that we do and the opportunities available to first year students. A partner will provide you with an overview of the firm, followed by two presentations designed to give you an insight into both our corporate and disputes practices. You'll then have an opportunity to network with our colleagues.


20th January 2025: 5pm - 8:30pm



First Year Presentation: How to Secure a First Year Programme (Virtual)


This online session will give you the opportunity to join our Early Careers team and get exclusive advice on our first year opportunities and how to make a successful application. Have your questions at the ready to make the most of this session.


17th January 2025: 4pm - 5pm
